Buttersworth welcomes white paper’s optimism for China

Independent Bethany Buttersworth today praised the defence white paper’s acknowledgment of China’s ‘peaceful rise’ as a key global power.

The Australian Defence strategy released yesterday outlined its positive relationship with China and said it no longer poses a threat.

During today’s campaign speech Mrs Buttersworth expressed support for the white paper’s goals to promote regional cooperation in the Indo-Pacific area.

She said education would provide a key part of furthering this relationship.

“The federal government has generated a white paper as part of the Asian century strategy to better our ties with our eastern neighbours,” she said.

“By doing our part for this federal initiative, we will contribute to improving the country’s economic state and we can make this contribution through education.”

Previous defence strategies declared China’s growth as a global power was a concern, however now is seen as a positive rise.
