Britain Takes Centre Stage at the London Somali Conference
This week leaders from 54 countries and organizations met at the Somali conference in London to discuss the international community’s involvement in the future of Somalia. The conference was hosted by Britain and organized as part of a long term strategy devised by the British government to assist Somalia’s recovery through providing humanitarian assistance and by also facilitating the conditions for development and international investment.
Somalia should have been the obvious focus of the conference but what emerged was Britain’s desire to be part of Somalia’s success. In the opening speech, the British Prime Minister David Cameron emphasized the intrinsic connection between Somalia and the UK by outlining how the terrorist threat in Somalia also affects Britain. He states that this is “because when young minds are poisoned by radicalism and they go on to export terrorism and extremism the security of the whole world including people here in Great Britain is at stake”…
