Murray doubtful for French Open
British number one Andy Murray says he would be “very surprised” if he is fit for the French Open after retiring injured against Marcel Granollers at the Italian Open.
Murray, 26 today, looked cumbersome in the warm up and despite battling back to win a second set tie-break on the Rome clay, he withdrew before the decisive set.
The second Grand Slam tournament of the year begins at Roland Garros on 26 May.
Australian Open finalist Murray was outclassed and outmaneuvered by world number 37 Granollers during a one-sided first set in Rome.
Murray then trailed 4-1 in the second set, visibly in pain after receiving treatment. However, the Scot showed great determination and grit to reduce Granollers’s lead to 4-3 and put pressure on the Spaniard for the first time in the match.
